        Alcune cose sull’antipetrarchismo - pp. 212-225

This essay examines the anti-petrarchist method used by Berni in his analysis of the sonnet “Alla sua donna”. The parodistic and allusive relation with Bembo’s “Crin d’oro crespo” and even more with “O superba e crudel” is here underlined. Numerous elements are also taken into account to demonstrate that the definition of “antipetrarchist” cannot be applied to Shakespearean and baroque poetry. As for Berni’s comic style, the author places it between the Fifth and Sixth century proto-modern realism.

      • DORA MARCHESE

Polisemia del paesaggio: dal Romanticismo all’età moderna - pp. 226-237

The author starts out by discussing the very definition and concept of landscape. She demonstrates that the relationships between landscape and literature has become more and more complex and varied between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Over the 20th century this relationship fragmented into a great variety of different meanings.

      • VALENTINO BALDI

Novelle dall’incubo. Immaginario onirico e strutture simmetriche in Berecche e la guerra e Una giornata - pp. 238-270

This essay focuses on the short stories written by Pirandello since 1929 and published in the two last editions of Novelle per un anno. By connecting a psychoanalytical approach – that starts from Freud and leads to Matte Blanco – to a detailed historical reconstruction of Pirandello’s travels to Berlin and Paris, Baldi rejects the definition ‘novelle surreali’ because in these short stories the emerging of the subconscious does not efface reality but leads to a new and different kind of “realism of presentation”.

      • FEDERICO PIANZOLA

Simboli e retoriche di San Giorgio in casa Brocchi - pp. 271-300

This essay analyses the rhetorical structure of the short story San Giorgio in casa Brocchi. Following Francesco Orlando’s theories and technique, the author traces several figures of speech Gadda make use of to construct a symbolic net that becomes more and more intense and complex as the narration goes on. The stylistic strength of the story is closely linked to the relations arising from the author’s syntactic, semantic and narrative choices. We can cast light on the intricacy of the text only by taking into due account both the rhetorical functions of each narrative element and the interaction between them.

        Soldati e il Nuovo Mondo.
        Dal «primo amore» alla «sposa americana»
        - pp. 301-324

This essay analyzes the way Mario Soldati’s passion for America developed between 1929, when he travelled to New York for the first time, and 1977, when he published his novel La sposa Americana, which represents the last stage of a stylistic evolution started with America primo amore and carried on with Le lettere da Capri and Addio diletta Amelia. All these works centre on a parallel between passing fancies and the author’s infatuation for America. During the Thirties, however, a disappointing experience at Columbia University forced him to define «a juvenile mistake» the feelings he had had for America. As an adult his grudge towards the nation that had not accepted accept him as a citizen decreased, allowing him to be more indulgent and rename “a juvenile enthusiasm” his passion for America.

Il «Risorgimento» di Corrado Alvaro - pp. 325-336

This article gives a short account of Corrado Alvaro’s activity as a journalist when he was the editor of the Neapolitan daily newspaper “Il Risorgimento”, founded in 1944. In this period, marked by the postwar economic recovery, the Calabrian writer kept on supporting the cause of Southern Italy.

L’amazzone guerriera e la figura adolescente nella poesia di Milo De Angelis - pp. 337-351

The Warrior Amazon is one of the central metaphors of Milo De Angelis’ s poetical works. De Angelis, who is interested in the role of women in Sparta, is really fascinated by this ‘Black Artemis’, whose presence is perceivable in his poetical works. This attraction is in connection with the author’s recollections of the past: since he was a teenager, he appreciated the athletic activity of the girls of his same age. For him, the precision and the exactness of gymnastics can be compared with the characteristic of poetry as he sees it. In his opinion, athletic virtue is similar to poetical perfection, because both can be reached only by great diligence and rigour.

        Un riepilogo bibliografico.
A proposito del fascismo di Gadda
        - pp. 351-366

The author reconstructs the days when Carlo Emilio Gadda contributed to several magazines in support of Fascism and its autarkic politics. He believed in Fascism from its origin: while in Argentina, for instance, he founded the Buenos Aires Fascio di Combattimento. This proves Gadda’s out-and-out agreement to a good number of Fascist activities and measures, which did not prevent him from railing at Mussolini when Italy was defeated in a war fought without taking into account its possible disastrous aftermath.
